The reasons why I would favour a "bulk sample" approach -- rather than an open pit approach -- at the vein 22 area are: a) hopefully the ore extraction could get up-and-running more quickly this way, since (I think) it could be done within the framework of the existing permits, rather than having to seek a "mining" permit;  b) at PDAC they had on display, some of the actual core samples from vein 22, including the one announced on Jan 11, 2012 (444 grams per ton), and I was surprised to see how narrow the vein was -- that figure of 444 g/t was the ratio you get when you include an entire meter of core, but the mineralized area was really just about an inch wide -- of very rich shiny gold! 

 

So, digging a pit might not be the optimal way of extracting this ore, even if the company did have the permitting to do so.  Some kind of a trench could be a lot more effective, I would think.
