IGAD Member States assemble to develop a Sustainable Tourism Master Plan (Jun 26, 2012)

A three day seminar for professionals and other stakeholders on developing a sustainable tourism master plan for the IGAD countries was convened in Addis Ababa last week. The importance of tourism is recognized under the 2004 African Union and NEPAD Tourism Action Plan for Africa. The Action Plan recognizes the industry’s potential for economic diversification, foreign exchange earnings and government revenue generation. It also acknowledges the sector as a vehicle for regional integration through trans-boundary activities. While recognizing the challenges that the continent faces, the action plan notes that effective implementation relies heavily on African countries creating an enabling and conducive environment for tourism development. Regional Economic Communities have a correspondingly important role to play. It is in recognition of the importance of tourism that IGAD initiated work aimed at encouraging member states to realize the potential of this sector. The meeting was a follow up to the 5th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts of the UNECA Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa that took place earlier in Djibouti.
