General Assembly before July 8
The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) spoke with a group of leaders of the peasant community San Juan de Canaris, Lambayeque region in order to clarify questions concerning mining investment and clear concerns about the Cañariaco exploration project owned by Candente Canadian Copper.
Deputy Minister of Mines, William Shinno Huamaní, reported that the meeting proposed to the villagers that the MEM in parallel with the General Assembly could make informative workshops on mining activities and seek closer ties with the mining company, which is finalized and which was used to clarify additional questions to the mining project.
He recalled that a justice of the peace in the area recently called a General Assembly on 8 July, at the request of 1,200 villagers of Canaris, community owns the surface rights of land Cañariaco project, so they can vote on the proposed mining of an agreement of right of access to the surface for a period of three years.
This community meeting, known as the General Assembly, is the legal process by which rural communities in Peru may vote on matters of importance to its members.
This important event was attended by Deputy Minister of Mines, William Shinno, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Management, Mariano Castro, the president of the Rural Community of San Juan de Canaris, Christopher Barrios, the regional manager of Energy and Mines of Lambayeque, Miguel Verona , Congressman Virgil Acuña, a representative of the Ombudsman, industry officials and community members.
