There is no real cost saving to RIM from that. Celestica and others just manufactured the units that they needed when they needed them. Just because RIM does not have a need for their services any more, it does not save them any money. That is and was part of the lure of contract manufacturing. If times were slow you did not have to worry about paying line workers to do little or nothing. That was the manufacturers problem. You just paid for what you needed.
Celestica on the other hand saved a lot. They had dedicated underutilized lines that towards the end were producing units for RIM at only 1.6% above their cost. Now they are retooling those lines for higher production higher margin items. The RIM contract was viewed as a liability to both Celestica and the market and their stock actually rose on the announcement of the termination of the RIM agreement.
