Professor Moriarty was Holmes' antagonist. There was a story, when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted to kill off Sherlock Holmes and move on to more serious writing, that Holmes and Moriarty had fallen to their deaths at Reichbach Falls while struggling on a narrow ledge.

However, fans were so outraged, that Doyle had to resurrect Holmes in a later story, explaining that Holmes had faked his own death.

I'm not sure why the poster thinks Moriarty outsmarted Holmes, since it is Moriarty's literary body that feeds the fishes at the bottom of the falls. Now, if EVG's share price can be resurrected. . . .
