As CEO, #2, is probably more important, since people are hired beneath him with specific knowledge to do the required tasks on a daily basis. So, if Tony can't adequately convey a message in a way that is effective, accurate, timely and influential - what is his value and positive impact on the company?
Communication excellence is REQUIRED at his level, it is not an option for a public company CEO.
Look at the US - Obama is a failure as a President through action, mandate and legislation, but his ability to communicate maintains his popularity amongst voters and will probably get him re-elected. How effective would a motivational speaker be if they couldn't communicate? Or sports coach?
This was almost a $2 billion dollar company, now 1/4 that size. Kid gloves got taken off a while back....
