With all due respect this:

"  I'm concerned about global warming and sulphur emissions but I'm also a pragmatist.  We need energy, and the burning of coal, oil and gas satisfy that need.  Without them we can't continue to exist in the world that we have come to rely upon for all of the comforts that we enjoy.  Maybe in the future we will have viable alternatives such as solar but for now we still need fossil fuels. "

Is the kind of defeatist thinking that has prevented real solutions from being developed for 40 years.  It's claptrap. Repeated ad naseum by people who can't think of other ways.

It is our resource we are the sole ones responsible for deciding whether it is appropriate to be used or not.
