problem you are having is that there is just not enough bids at each level to support a sustained price. So when you get one trader selling say 10000 shares, you basically break a level and the bid drops to the next level which might be 2 cents below the current price. Of course the reverse is also true when the bidders start coming in, then the asks are thin at each level, and thus the quick increase we saw earlier on relatively low volume
