Navistar Defense Receives $282 Million Order for MRAP Upgrades ................... Navistar Defense received an order today from the U.S. Army to retrofit 2300 Mine Resistant Ambush Protecteed vehicles with updated armor and equipment in response to changing conditions in Afghanistan. The $282 million order consists of retrofit kits that will be delivered and installed on-site in Afghanistan starting in December 2012. The order is expected to be completed by June 2013. More than 9000 MaxxPro MRAP units are in service among allied forces.
The company has offered various stages of retrofit options for military vehicles since 2007, including its MaxxPro rolling chassis body swap, which is composed of the company's DXM independent suspension, MaxxForce 9.3 six-cylinder turbodiesel engine, and 570-amp alternator and driveline. The retrofit options are designed to give vehicles improved capability and technology for a lower cost than purchasing a brand-new vehicle.
Navistar Defense submitted a bid to be selected for the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development phase of the Department of Defense's next-generation Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program, but AM General, the maker of the long-running HMMWV (Humvee), Lockheed Martin, and Oshkosh were the finalists ultimately selected for the EMD stage.
