Is allowing e coli contamination knowingly polluti The interview with Dr. Finley was old news to a large extent, but very much worth listening to.
He re enforces the point, very well, that cattlemen see no need to vaccinate as their cows are perfectly healthy. That was the old stance of the plastics and chemical industry in the early 70s..."Why should we pay to control our effluent and pollutants when what we dump in the Great Lakes doesn't affect us".
Tens, if not hundreds of thousands died of cancer throughout the great lakes basin because of this dumping, but the argument was valid from the manufacturer's perspective..."If there is no law against dumping/polluting why should we care"
Essentially, the crux of the debate here comes down to whether allowing e coli to shed is polluting, and threatening the safety of Canadians and the industry as a whole. With all the studies indicating that a large percentage of cattle shed e coli, how can anyone argue that cattlemen are not knowingly polluting.
If there were no solution fair enough. Just as there may have been no solution for dumping raw effluent into the Great Lakes or running unfiltered smoke stacks for 100 years. Once a solution is available, you (the cattlemen) should be held liable for failing to adopt. Clearly the Cons have no interest in legislating, to protect public safety or otherwise, but if a subsidy were available, and litigation for failure to adopt were on the table, we'd eliminate the e coli problem with 5 years.
