RE: RE: RE: K'omok' First Nations Strongly The K'omoks First Nations is strongly opposed to the Raven coal mine as its toxic drainage will harm their economic investment in shellfish leases it owns. FN groups care about protecting a highly vulnerable Baynes Sound that is already high with toxins from closed mines and about providing jobs for their children. The coal mine methane and C02 emissions that cannot be mitigated will add to the already high acid levels of the Baynes Sound that is killing off baby shellfish. A recent UVic report on global warming and Pacific coast marine ecosystems identifies Baynes Sound a high risk area that needs to be protected from GHG. Further, the K'omoks deny CEC claims of consultation etc and charge CEC with failing to address their needs...Read their public statement re future actions to prevent Raven from threatening their long term interests.
