The crisis that struck the rare earths market, the essential components of new technologies, will not last as Christian Hocquard, economist rare earths.

The future belongs to rare earths Photo: ReutersLa crisis is caused by a protectionist policy of the Chinese government, but beyond 2015, it will continue, he added.

China is the largest producer of rare earths, with over 95% of production. Its current strategy is to repatriate the transformation. She wants to develop an industry increasingly sophisticated develop products with high added value. It therefore imposes quotas to limit exports of rare earths.

"China limits the production of its rare earths, said Mr. Hocquard. It has a production quota and if you run just resonates with the application of growth over time, in 2015, it will consume 30 000 tonnes of export quotas. "

For its part, Frederick Gauthier, Director Sustainable Development Resources Geo Mega sees the future with confidence. The project Montivel in Lebel-sur-Quévillon, contains an interesting potential neodymium permanent magnets main component used in the manufacture of wind.

"We are confident that we are moving towards a niche market, he said. We want to produce a grade ore, which will be used for renewable energy. We also want to operate responsibly in environmentally and socially. We're talking about clean energy, it will give added value to our product. "
2015
"So if we expect in 2015, there will be more rare earths available, there will be more complaints to do vis-à-vis China, as it will consume all the rare earths it product, "said Christian Hocquard.

The Abitibi-Témiscamingue, which has great potential for rare earths could take advantage of these circumstances. "It is more urgent to find deposits outside China," said Mr. Hocquard
The mining Matamec, meanwhile, plans to operate a deposit of rare earths in Témiscamingue 2015.
