Mackenzie Valley Winter Road gets funding for upgrades
MACKENZIE VALLEY, N.W.T
The federal government recently announced that it would fund improvements to the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road via the Provincial Territorial Base Fund.
The project encompasses strengthening the road structure and constructing 10 or more permanent, all-season bridges. Currently, the roadway is only open during the winter season when creek beds and soft tundra are frozen solid.
According to Infrastructure Canada, creating all-season passages through Mackenzie Valley will vastly improve the flow of goods and services which will reduce the cost of living for residents.
It will also create competitive business and opportunities to diversify the economy in the northern parts of the country.
The road is also an important connection to the province’s oil, gas and mineral resources.
The Canadian government is committed to paying $185.8 million to build the road link.
