RUSAL, the world's leading producer of aluminum, signed December 31, an operating agreement of the Dian-Dian bauxite deposit with the Government of Guinea. The Board of Directors of the company has not yet officially approved this agreement.
Situated in the Boke region, 370 km northwest of Conakry, this deposit contains the largest reserves of bauxite in the world. RUSAL provides, by late 2015, the construction of a mine which will have production capacity of 3 million tons of bauxite per year.
The second phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2019. It includes the increase of production capacity to 6 million tonnes per year and the construction of a refinery that can produce 1.2 million tonnes of alumina a year.
Eventually, depending on the economic situation of the company, the production will be 12 million tonnes of bauxite per year and 2.4 million tons of alumina by Rusal.
RUSAL is already implemented in Guinea through its mine of Kindia (40% of its total production of bauxite) and its complex Friguia. This complex refinery was in 2012, strikes repeatedly, including Rusal theatre was used as a means of pressure to obtain the deposit of Dian-Dian.
