I work for a large ISP who does Colocation and has a downtown Manhatan location. We had to get our guys to stay onsight 24/7 babysitting the generators, filling them with gas, keeping customers equipment up/cooled and make sure they had backup generators because the failover generators weren't meant to be run 24/7. (they are normally used for brief power outages)
The cost to install proper backup generators for power outages, then redundant generators for when the main generators need servicing isn't cost effective. It's better to try and do a controlled shutdown and hope things don't get messed up too bad. Interesting to see the mindset of some of you guys. haha
