Troy Mine's Safety Record
Troy Mine's Safety Record I, too, have looked at the Troy Mine’s track record on safety and disagree with the previous post. Compared to similar operations, Troy’s record stands up quite well. The Stillwater Mine, for instance, has a five year MSHA NFDL Incidence rate average of 2.46, the East Boulder Mine’s average is 1.96, Galena’s in neighboring Idaho is 7.16, Montana’s Drumlummon Mine average is just over 4 and Revett’s is 2.20. The national 5 year average for their type of mines is 2.35. Troy’s 2012 NFDL of 3.98 is above average but their 2011 NFDL was .51 – well below average. Troy paid near $40k in fines in 2012 – the other mines anywhere from $33k to $101k. Yes, some outstanding citations are being contested and resolved – but that is an important function at all of the mines since not every citation is found to be valid. These positive results are a product of a focus on safety at Troy that runs from the managers to the janitors and focuses on constantly working to meet or exceed ever-changing regulatory requirements and worker expectations. I know firsthand that the workforce is personally proud of their focus on safety and I am relieved by this since I have friends and relatives that work there.
