From a friend, regarding pyrite :

pyrite deposition is often associated with the deposition of other minerals...the rust colored gossan are easily discerned because the pyrite has colored them such... now the pyrite is usually too low grade to be economic but it does accompany a good many mineral despositions.. as pyrite is a very common mineral
