Bombardier wins UK Train Award
Company’s ‘Safety with Attitude’ continuous improvement programme recognised for Internal Communications Excellence
Bombardier ‘Highly Commended’ in Supplier of the Year category
Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has won an industry acclaimed award for Internal Communications Excellence at the annual Rail Business Awards, which recognise excellence across the rail industry.
At an event held at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London on February 27, 2013, Bombardier received the award for its ‘Safety with Attitude – let’s just do it’ continuous improvement programme. The ‘Safety with Attitude’ communications programme involves all of Bombardier’s services locations in the UK – 31 in total – encompassing both Bombardier owned sites and customers’ depots. Since its inception in late 2010, the company has witnessed a 40% reduction in all accidents, a 70% reduction in days lost through accidents, and a 50% reduction in serious injuries.
The aim of Bombardier’s Safety with Attitude campaign is to achieve a fundamental change in attitudes and behaviour in relation to health, safety and the environment (HSE) across Bombardier’s UK services sites through an ongoing process of communication and continuous improvement. Promoting employee health and safety is an essential element of Bombardier’s Corporate Social Reponsibility commitment.
Paul Roberts, President, Bombardier Services UK explained: “Our strategy was to maximize our safety at work, through our procedures, our employees’ mindsets and most importantly looking at how we could apply our practices in our daily and nightly business shift operations. It needs to be part of every employee’s DNA.”
Andy Shaw, Head of Quality, Health and Safety and Environment for Bombardier in the UK, added: “Our safety journey started back in the summer of 2010. We started by listening to the concerns and opinions of over 120 team leaders from around the UK and from this exercise came the understanding that we needed to improve the safety culture of our organisation in the UK. Our goal was simple really – to eliminate all accidents from our workplace and create a safe, healthier place to work.”
In addition to receiving the top award for internal communications excellence, Bombardier was highly commended in the category of supplier excellence for its support of London’s train operators during the 2012 Olympics. Bombardier’s maintenance teams and support functions worked around the clock last summer to ensure that more than 800 Bombardier trains on nine key routes serving London were available to meet the increased demand. BOMBARDIER ORBITA real-time data gathering and diagnostic technology actively monitored the fleets to identify any maintenance issues before they affected passenger services, while the train depots provided round-the-clock updates on fleet availability and highlighted where support was required.
