The Department of Homeland Security has purchased more than 2,700 Mine Resistant Armor Protected Vehicles (MRAP) for use on the streets of the United States, according to the Gateway Pundit on Sunday.
MRAP vehicles are primarily used by the U.S. military and are designed to protect troops from ambushes, land mines and improvised explosive devices (IED).
After IEDs began to take a toll on U.S. military forces in Iraq, the Pentagon ordered a large supply of MRAPs. USA Today reported in 2008 that because of these vehicles, fatalities from IEDs had decreased:
Almost 7,000 heavily armored Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles have been rushed to Iraq in the last year. "They've taken hits, many, many hits that would have killed soldiers and marines in uparmored Humvees," Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a recent interview.
So why would the Department of Homeland Security, a domestic law enforcement agency, need a vehicle designed for war?
Some believe that the DHS is preparing for civil unrest within the United States. Over the last year, the DHS has been stockpiling 2 billion rounds of mostly hollow point ammunition, including .40 caliber, 9mm and .223, as well as .357 magnum rounds that are capable of penetrating walls. The department also purchased 7,000 fully automatic assault rifles and asupply of "No More Hesitation" paper targets depicting typical Americans with firearms, including a young boy, a pregnant woman and a young mother with her child.
The DHS has remained mostly silent on the ammo and firearms orders, going so far as to twiceblack out information on solicitations after attention began to be brought to them.
