New elections for Cañaris
Communards of Canaris asked to call elections for leadership
Ferreñafe, Tues 15 (ANDINA). Various grassroots organizations of the rural community of San Juan de Canaris, in the province of Ferreñafe, in Lambayeque, today demanded the convening of elections for the board of that town.
The president of the Association of Ecological Producers of Canaris, Elijah Julca Palomino said that urges a fair and transparent electoral process to elect a new board.
For that reason this guild and other organizations filed a legal appeal to the Ferreñafe province.
Julca Palomino said the president of the community, Christopher Barrios Carrillo, "has formed a group without convening a general meeting. Just met with 25 people around them to consummate their reelection illegal, "he said.
He added that this committee formally organized elections next Sunday 24, but said he has information that indicates that the process is done in the course of the next few hours or days.
The grassroots leader called on the community, which is usually concentrated in their field work, to not give up on having a clean and transparent process to renew the board of Canaris.
He argued that Christopher Barrios can not be president of the community for a third consecutive reelection because that is prohibited by the statutes governing the community and the General Law on Rural Communities in Peru.
He said that according to regulations, Barrios Carrillo had to have an election committee convened by the General Assembly, no later than October 15 2012, but he did not and he stay in office for beyond, when in January 2013 a new President had to assume his duties. "
He said that Barrios during his term (four years) never did anything, not even got a cent from government or NGOs for development projects for the people
