I've seen this before - big names put their weight behind some enterprise, either through political offices, or by joining the Board of Directors of the company to lend it some pizzazz, only to see everything go bust in the long run. The main thing though, is that they make sure that they are well compensated along the way for their efforts. What's left over might, just might, be split up across the thousands of smaller players/shareholders.
