Media and Advertising Influence

Media and Advertising Influence

I was in a Rogers store today to research their Rocket Sticks and the possibility of an internet connection from Cuba.  EXPENSIVE!!!

While I was waiting I overheard a family trying to decide on a smart phone. Father, mother and an eight(ish) year old son.

The son wanted an Iphone because it was cool. Everybody had one. The mother wanted an Iphone because of the App selection. The father was looking at price.  Samsung was in favour due to the $0 price tag. (on contract of course) The BB Z10 wasn't discussed ....$99.00

How confusing is this? How does the BB marketing message alert the public that it is NOT cool to have 700k apps with the potential of 1/3 being malware driven? How does BB alert the public that these apps could ruin their lives and their child's from identity theft and more?

The 50% increase in marketing budget is very likely well spent to combat the existing media and advertising messages about app volume and coolness.

Security is one of the defining factors. Would you knowingly open your front door and let anyone into your house? Why is a smart phone any different?

S.
