thorium Toorisky;
There are lots of designs for new types of reactors, but given my age I might need to live to 120 to see substantial impact from any of those new designs. Nuclear regulators are very conservative in giving approval to any new technology. It will take considerable testing of new prototrypes long before we see their introduction to the market. What's out there now is surprisingly safe and I would agree in principle with one of Purplelofts earlier posts that Tepco's handling of the Fukishima crisis was less than stellar. The end result is that the proven reactor designs get " tarred and feathered" through that operator error. No doubt, these other reactor designs (and there are many of them) will be explored over longer time frames.
