They are not secure as far as I know, and they are NOT NFC--as Wavector already said. Imagine some hacker siting outside Barneys scanning the airwaves/wifi for your cc info as it passes from your phone to the retailers iPad/iPod?--a goldmine of info to be exploited. NFC won't allow that.
