RE: Take responsibility for your stock picks

RE: Take responsibility for your stock picks

I agree that a person should take responsibility for doing their own due diligence before investing in any stock recommended by BNN guests. In my view, the best way to examine Eric Nuttall's managerial performance is to compare his Energy fund with other Energy Funds and see how he stacks up. I am not sure how long Eric has been manager of the Energy fund, but over the past five years, the annual return on the SPROTT ENERGY FUND for each year from 2008-2012 has been -64.5%, 76.1%, 32.6%, -11.0%, -12.5%. ALTAMIRA ENERGY FUND: -37.9%, 38.9%, 22.2%, -8.4%, -10.5%. BISSETT ENERGY FUND: -44.5%, 57.4%, 50.1%, 7.0%, 3.7%. RBC ENERGY FUND: -49.0%, 40.9%, 19.4%, -5.2%, -13.4%. TD ENERGY FUND: -41.8%, 36.7%, 16.6%, -15.7%, -2.1%. (Source Globe and Mail). The Bissett Energy fund seems to have been the best performer hands down over the past 5 years. Other than that, Sprott seems be among the rest of the pack, with below-average performance over the past couple of years. We'll have to wait and see what the 2013 numbers are, but, compared to its peers, the Sprott Energy fund neither stands out as being particularly good nor particularly bad in terms of portfolio performance.
