RE: RE: Maybe this is why - Europe Tobacco is not a food. There are also other reasons why some are against GM-plants/food. Worldwide growth of GM-crops and corns further reduce the biodiversity of plants for food production and increase the dependence of farmers from a 3 or 4 GM-seed producers such as Syngenta, Monsanto, Bayer and Pioneer.
It also has been shown that the genetically modification has been spread from GM-crops to other crops via wind, seed contamination and maybe insects.
It is just one step more towards an entirely industrial food production witth many negative side effects. Though personally I also do not believe that the approved GMO crops are of any health concerns for the consumers. Indeed, eating too much and too much animal derived foods and fats are the real risks in combination with no physical activity.
We move too far from BXI. Anyway, it is as it is: in the EU genetically modified soy, rapeseed/canola and corn are approved and can be marketed, but there is very little, if any, growth and production of these GM-crops.
Many PRO GMO people argued in the past that this would cause a disadvantage for Europe if it is that restrictive on GMO. BXI and the JV, if comes hopefully, would prove the opposite: some companies may prefere non GMO crops as a source for their foods.
