Zimbabwe presses ahead with Impala Platinum land grabPrint
30 APRIL 2013
Zimbabwe will press ahead with the acquisition of land belonging to Zimplats, a unit of Impala Platinum.
Mines secretary Prince Mupazviriho said the issue was "under discussion" but the government had no plans to shy away from the process while talks were ongoing.
"This is a procedural issue, that's why we gazetted the issue to say if anyone has concerns or an objection it can be raised, but this doesn't mean we will stop the acquisition of the land," he told Bloomberg.
Zimbabwe set out its intentions in a Government Gazette Extraordinary at the beginning of March saying it would take 27,498 hectares of the miner's property.
The company was given 30 days to appeal but in the April 26th edition of the gazette the government said it "intends to acquire compulsorily" part of the land held by Zimplats.
According to Bloomberg, Zimbabwe is preparing a law allowing it to seize controlling stakes in companies without compensation.
This will build on the 2007 indigenisation law compelling foreign and white-owned miners to hand over a 51% stake to local black investors.
