Minister Clement highlights Harper Government's commitment to Northern Ontario municipalities at FONOM Conference
PARRY SOUND - The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka and Minister for FedNor, was in Parry Sound today to meet with municipal leaders and highlight how the Harper Government is working with Northern Ontario municipalities to develop, strengthen and diversify the region’s economy.
“Our Government's top priority is jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Clement. “We are committed to helping Northern Ontario communities tackle key regional issues, such as the adoption of new technology and the fostering of innovation, as well as finding ways to capitalize on emerging development opportunities like the Ring of Fire.”
Minister Clement was a keynote speaker at the 2013 annual conference of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) where he outlined some of the key measures introduced in Economic Action Plan 2013 that will benefit Northern Ontario, including:
Introducing a new Building Canada Plan that will lead to better roads, bridges and public transit in cities and communities across Canada;
Investing in world-class research and innovation to help ensure new ideas are developed and transferred from laboratories into the marketplace;
Providing $92 million over two years starting in 2014-15 to promote forestry innovation and market development, and to support the continued transformation of the forestry sector;
Investing $4.4 million over three years in the Ring of Fire Capacity Building Initiative through FedNor.
With a theme of Connecting and Strengthening Communities, this year’s FONOM conference provided an opportunity for Northern Ontario municipal leaders to brainstorm and develop strategies to further develop the region’s economy and ensure its sustainability.
A FedNor investment of $15,000, provided through the Northern Ontario Development Program, enabled FONOM to organize and host its annual conference.
"Our Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," concluded Minister Clement.
