Yes, but in addition mice are small, quick breeers, and amenable to transgenic manipulation (knockout/overexpression). Mice are actually a horrible atherosclerotic model because of some major differences compared to humans/primates in therms of cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism. That being said, the use of transgenic techniques to manipulate ta few key mouse genes and feeding the critters extreme diets allow for atherosclerotic plaque formation in mice.
