And from my experience I have never heard of politicians making good miners either, but I have heard of governments practicing extortion and expropriation for whatever corrupt reasons lie within their political agendas. 

"Political Risk" must always be factored into the equation when considering buying stock in a mining company and this risk does not necessitate the government putting on a hard hat and mining the mines themselves to get that huge piece of money pie any more than it does you to get your small sliver of the money pie as a stock holder.  But you with your 40 years experience already know this I am sure.
