Wheelies: The FARC Tungsten Edition

Wheelies: The FARC Tungsten Edition
• Consumers seldom pause to consider from where the raw materials for their cars have come. But a Bloomberg report filed Wednesday says that tungsten used by manufacturers that include BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, Volkswagen, Siemens, Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Samsung Electronics get their tungsten from a company that uses ore from mines controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as FARC. According to Bloomberg’s report, FARC runs its own tungsten mine in Colombia’s Amazon region, but also controls other nearby mines.

Ferrari told Bloomberg that it bought materials from an Austrian ore processor, Plansee, which Bloomberg found bought 102 tons of tungsten ore from Colombian suppliers in 2012. Ferrari declined to offer further comment. BMW said in the report that it tried to avoid materials of dubious origin, and Volkswagen said it did not tolerate it, although VW confirmed that it also buys from Plansee. (Bloomberg)
