S Korea's Jul LNG imports fall below 2.5 mil mt for first time in 11 months

Singapore (Platts)--15Aug2013/421 am EDT/821 GMT

South Korea imported 2.43 million mt of LNG in July, marking the first time since August 2012 that the country's monthly imports fell below 2.5 million mt, customs data released Thursday showed.

July's LNG imports were down 11.8% year on year and down 12.5% from June's revised LNG import volume of 2.77 million mt.

Qatar remained South Korea's top supplier of LNG in July, delivering 784,298 mt, down 18.9% year on year and down 16% from June.

Oman came in second, sending 363,287 mt of LNG to South Korea in July, up 49.2% year on year but down 1.3% month on month.

South Korea's average July LNG import price was $775.41/mt ($14.91/MMBtu), down 5.5% from a year ago and down a marginal 0.2% from June. The South Korean customs data showed an LNG cargo sourced from Panama, which has no existing LNG liquefaction terminals, according to Platts data. It could not be immediately confirmed if the information was an error.

Despite the lower LNG import volume for July, South Korea's state-owned Korea Gas Corp. saw its LNG sales for the month rise 13.8% year on year to 2.57 million mt, marking year-on-year growth for four consecutive months. Kogas attributed the increased sales to strong demand for electricity generation following nuclear outages.

Indonesia reached a deal with Kogas to allocate six available cargoes -- each around 125,000 cubic meters in size -- from the Bontang LNG plant in East Kalimantan for the remainder of this year on top of previously contracted volumes, an Indonesian official said early August.
