Kenora mayor Dave Canfield is ready for the Throne Speech
There's going to be a familiar face in the crowd, as the federal government begins a new session. Kenora mayor Dave Canfield says he received an invitation to the Throne Speech, which takes place Wednesday in Ottawa. He says he's looking forward to the opportunity to bring attention to some of the issues in the region.
"We spend a couple of hours with the ministers, basically a meet and greet. It's going to be a great opportunity to bend the ear on quite a few of the ministers on some of the needs that we have in Kenora and northwestern Ontario," he said.
Canfield says one of the issues he intends to bring forward is the infrastructure surrounding the Ring of Fire.
"I want to bring things up around the Ring of Fire, and the infrastructure that's needed to build part of northern Ontario. We should be treated like southern Ontario or anywhere else. There's not only employment, but there's a huge opportunity for finances for federal and provincial governments. There's revenues and taxation," he said.
While he's looking forward to speaking with the ministers about various issues, he says overall he's expecting a good experience.
"I'm kind of interested, I've never been to a Throne Speech before. I've been to budget hearings before, provincially but I've never heard a Throne Speech. I'm looking forward to it. I'll be listening eagerly and I'm sure there will be good dialogue with the ministers," he said.
The Throne Speech will take place beginning at 3:30 central time.
