Don't be fooled that you dont pay for DRIP when done through your broker. Your broker will round to the nearest share and keep everything after the decimal for themselves. They also use a Market Price as at date, as you specified.
On the other hand a company supported DRIP program will give you the "after the decimal" shares and give you a discounted price on the share price, generally 95% of the VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) for a specific number of days before the x date, usually 5-10 days before.
