Yes, but only because a loss is usually not fully "realized" - in both senses of the word! - until a losing investment is actually sold. If you've already mentally written it off, it's no problem. (FWIW, I've mentally written off my modest investment in SND. It's at the back of my sock drawer until late 2016.)
But as you said, the purchase price is meaningless, what matters is the current (and potential future) value. Apart from the pernicious effects of hope and denial, however, is the fact that because something really was worth a lot more at the time one bought it, it encourages you to think that it is grossly mispriced and will recover, and probably immediately after you sell it.
I think the best measure of whether to sell or not is to ask yourself if you didn't already own it, would you buy it at the current price? If yes, hold, and if no, sell and don't look back. (Unless of course, you think there something to learn from knowing the outcome of your decision.)
