EXFO vs Newport. After researching both Newport, which is up over 2000% in the past year, and EXFO I found that EXFO is doing better in the Fiber Optic & Photonic testing & measurement instrument area. I pulled up the balance sheets on both. Newport is broken down into 3 areas, Fiber Optic & Photonic testing & measurement instruments, Industrial & Scientific Technologies and Video Metrology. EXFO focus' only on Fiber Optic & Photonics. When I compared these two companies head to head EXFO has better sales and earnings. Luckily Newport breaks down thier balance sheets in the three areas they operate in and I only compared EXFO with Newports Fiber Optics & Photonics sales/earnings. In 1997 Newport had sales in this area of 16.099 million with earnings (-1.232 million) vs EXFO had sales 24.475 million with earnings of 4.925 million. In 1998 Newport had sales 24.079 million with earnings of 1.639 million vs EXFO had sales 31.605 million with earnings of 6.691 million. In 1999 Newport had sales 35.450 million with earnings 3.805 million vs EXFO had sales 42.166 million with earnings of 8.676 million. After comparing the balance sheets it became obvious that EXFO is more efficient. EXFO says that they believe that they are the largest Fiber Optic & Photonics testing and measurement instrument mftr in the world. I found that they have added over 200 employess in the past year and did spend approx 4-5 millon last year in R&D. They are building a customer base at a rapid pace, 650 customers added in fiscal year 1999 and over 400 through the first 2 quarters of fiscal yr 2000. Their customers include Nortel Networks, Bell Atlantic, AT&T, Marconi, and the list goes on. It is good to know that no one customer accounts for more than 3% of sales. The more research I've done, the more money I want to put in this company. I hope it dips a little more on Monday so I can add to my position. They list Newport as a competitor which is why I compared the two. If EXFO can grow share price 20% of what Newport has it will have a lot of happy investors. Look for the stock to soar when new coverage is initiated by the analysts, as there was 3-4 brokerages involved in the IPO.
