I guess that depends on your time frame for investment, expectations of future gold prices, etcc...I would prefer to own gold companies in the prospecting stage...once companies start to develop generally their share prices stabalize and maybe even decline...the exciting part is finding the gold!!! 
I think the management is prob more interested in discoveries--but that is only my opinion...whats wrong with finding a great deposit and selling for good profit in a few years? with no future risk of gold prices or cost overuns etcc...less risk IMO.
I guess i wouldnt mind if they had one deposit on the go to mine if they were discovering others and selling those off in the mean time...
how many stocks can you think of that take off after the mining starts? or once they decide to build the mine--those few years before production are usually dull for the share price.
