Northeast Observer - Northeast braces for more cold; prices will face strong upward pressure
Northeast premium price points are poised to face strong upward pressure again this week as the region braces for another blast of cold. Bentek estimates Northeast demand will average 33 Bcf/d the next three days, peaking Tuesday at 36 Bcf/d, roughly 17 Bcf/d above normal. The last time demand exceeded 36 Bcf/d (on Jan. 28 and 29) spot prices blew out, with TETCO M3 and Transco Zone 6 NNY cash prices hitting $79 and Transco Zone 6 NY reaching $91. However, during that event Midwest and Southeast demand hit 31 Bcf/d and 22 Bcf/d, respectively. During this week’s cold snap, Midwest and Southeast demand is expected to be much lower, averaging only 23 Bcf/d and 18 Bcf/d the next three days, in line with demand levels noted in last week’s cold snap. This suggests premium Northeast prices should not see spikes to Jan. 28 levels, but rather spikes similar to last week’s when spot prices at Transco Zone 6 NY and NNY and TETCO M3 jumped $5-10 to settle between $12-25.less
