PDAC 2014: Canadian stock exchange joins Chile to form South American mining exchange
BloombergSmall and medium-sized companies that are listed on the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX-V) will be given an opportunity to list on the new stock exchange, allowing them to tap capital from markets in Latin America.
A division of TSX Group Ltd. is teaming up with an exchange in Santiago to create a new venture exchange in Chile with an initial focus on the mining sector.
Small and medium-sized companies that are listed on the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX-V) will be given an opportunity to list on the new stock exchange, allowing them to tap capital from markets in Latin America.
The agreement could also bring more South American companies to the Canadian venture exchange.
“This agreement will provide us with TSX-V’s expertise in implementing and regulating this type of market,” said José Antonio Martínez, the general manager of the Santiago Stock Exchange. “We hope that the Venture Market in Chile generates the same recognition as TSX-V.”
Mr. Martinez described the plan as “a huge step forward in terms of innovation and leadership” for the Chilean exchange, which hopes to develop the capital markets to provide funding opportunities for projects seeking initial capital.
Regulatory approval is being sought, with hopes to begin operations at the Santiago Stock Exchange, Venture, in the first half of next year.
Shortly after announcing the agreement Monday between the venture division of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Santiago exchange, Mr. Martínez and Roberto Ibarra García, a Chilean ambassador, were to join TMX Group executives for the close of trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange and its venture counterpart.
