I can only assume maybe succumbed to the then power and dominance of Silicon and switched to the winner of the time. Others probably didn't have the funding to continue the R&D. Those who did, probably fell behind that of Taylor and patents, and realized their efforts were too far gone. I imagine some joined forces to work with Taylor. Others still may have continued, but just are too far behind. That and misc other outcomes.
