AIMCo would make its investment into so-called "skunk works" projects, De Bever said. The term comes from Maryland-based Lockheed Martin's advanced development programs unit, which researches and creates new technologies that are tested and later integrated into the parent company. De Bever said he's already found companies he's considering investing in, though he declined to name them.

The technologies, which would be sold to industry, would generate equity-style returns in five to seven years while improving Alberta's economy and energy industry, De Bever said.
