Think Zinc
Think ZincLest we get carried away with red herrings, one should remember that Dowa's interest in this project is copper-zinc ore feed for its smelters in Japan. Yes, they also have proprietary technology for the extraction of PGMs, but base metals is their principal business.
Drilling to date has shown the deposit ranks high in net smelter return as compared to other VMS deposits in North America i.e. it's rich enough to be highly profitable, given a deposit size that justifies the investment required. Much of the necessary infrastructure required is already in place or readily available. There appear to be no impediments to conventional extraction technologies.
It's easy to worry about environmental considerations, and one should certainly keep these issues in mind. However, as Chilkatpete points out, Haines needs high paying jobs. Alaskans tend to be independent and hard working. Constantine now has a partner, in effect, that will see the state directly benefit economically from Palmer going ahead. The recent Haines land
agreement may be the greates coup of all in garnering influence to counter the arguments of the greenies.
We are looking very likely at a world class deposit that can be mined responsibly and cost effectively. That's what we need to focus on.
