Seems to me they already took the black eye. (And a nice big shiner it was.) As with the SND acquisition, what they are doing now is trying to turn lemons into lemonade. 
 
All of the value Sandstorm saw in Sierra Pelada when it made its original investment hasn't disappeared, it's still lying there underground. The only issue is whether they can find someone who can extract it profitably, without running into the same obstacles that sunk CSI. 
 
If they can, they will have increased Sandstorm's share of the bounty significantly. If they can't, it doesn't appear that they are prepared to sink much additional capital themselves into the effort. Investors have basically written off  the deal, and we've already taken the hit in the share price. It seems to me that the upside far outweighs the downside at this point.
