RE:Overview of SAGD issues and solutions
Thanks, Hudsonq1234, for finding that disertation. Adding foam to the steam injection may be another promising way to get the bitumen out. A heterogenous steam chamber sounds like
STP.
I have only perused the abstract and introduction, but it sounds promising. The dissertaion was written in 2009. As will be seen from the quote below, foaming the steam at that time was just a concept. I wonder if any real life applications with foam have been tried since then. Most certianly, there are other stimulants besides foam.
Well over a year ago when STP was just starting steam injection, I was at the Grey Cup in a private box at BC Place. In the adjoining box; was a group of Encana executives who flew in for the event. With no barrier between the two boxes, I got talking to one of the senior executives about STP getting the bitumen out of the ground. I recall the person saying that engineers would figure a way to get it out. I still believe that, although I am usure of how it will be achieved, who will do it, and whose engineers will have the expertise.
ICDs are promising, but they are not the only method.
"Because foam encounters significant flow resistance in porous media, foaming
the steam overcomes the adverse mobility of steam injection and possibly improves
the steam chamber development in a SAGD process. To the best of the author’s
knowledge, deployment of foam in a SAGD process has not yet been investigated."
