VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - June 18, 2014) - Calyx Bio-Ventures Inc. (TSX VENTURE:CYX) ("Calyx") announces that its investee company Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. ("Agrisoma") has been awarded the Gold Leaf Award as "Company of the Year", by BIOTECanada for biotechnology excellence in Canada.
BIOTECanada is a national industry association reflecting the diverse nature of Canada's health, industrial and agricultural biotechnology sectors. In addition to providing significant health benefits for Canadians, the biotechnology industry has quickly become an essential part of the transformation of many traditional cornerstones of the Canadian economy.
The Gold Leaf Awards are nominated and judged by biotechnology industry leaders, and the awards honour companies that have made significant contributions to the growth of Canada's biotech sector.
"Agrisoma's innovation is a fantastic demonstration of how biotechnology helps to provide the solutions needed to address the pressing challenges facing our society and environment. The company has offered an opportunity for farmers to produce a dedicated energy crop using land considered marginal, without impacting food production," commented Andrew Casey, President and CEO of BIOTECanada. "The vision and dedication of Agrisoma offers inspiration and promise for the economy and society more broadly. Using the tools of biotechnology to rapidly enhance performance and enhance sustainability only adds to the importance of agriculture in meeting the social, environmental and economic challenges associated with rapid global population growth."
Don Konantz, President and CEO of Calyx stated, "Agrisoma's next generation agricultural products can provide a sustainable solution for renewable energy. Carinata is the first non-food crop that produces oil uniquely suited for "drop in" feedstock for biojet and biodiesel fuel production and Carinata was used to fuel the world's first 100% renewable biojet fuel flight here in Canada. This Gold Leaf Award recognizes these accomplishments."
The Gold Leaf Award will be presented during a ceremony at the BIO International Convention in San Diego, California at the Canada Place Pavilion on Tuesday June 24 at 4pm.
