Ethiopian Inflation Slows, But Still Too High

Ethiopian Inflation Slows, But Still Too High

Ethiopia inflation slows to 8.7 pct in year to May

ADDIS ABABA, June 12 (Reuters) - Ethiopia's inflation rate eased to 8.7 percent in the year to May from 9.1 percent the previous month, after a fall in the price of some food items, official data showed on Thursday.

The Central Statistics Agency (CSA) said food price rises slowed to 6.3 percent in May over the 12-month period from 8 percent in April, driven by a dip in price decreases of bread and cereals.

Non-food prices, however, edged up to 11.4 percent in the year to May from 10.3 percent the previous month, owing largely to price increases of khat, a leafy plant chewed as a stimulant in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian peninsula, as well as clothing, footwear, house rent and household goods and furniture.
