Barzani expected to ask parliament for referendum this week 01.07.2014 Hawar Abdulrazaq BasNews, Erbil President Massoud Barzani is expected to ask Kurdish Parliament for a referendum on independence on Thursday. A source in parliament who asked to remain anonymous has informed BasNews that Barzani will speak of the recent developments in Iraq and deliver what the source called a ‘historical’ speech regarding Kurdistan’s future. Kamaran Subhan, the Press Secretary of Kurdish Parliament speaker Youssef Muhammad, told BasNews that Barzani spoke with Muhammad on the phone. “Barzani talked to Youssef Muhammad and said he will be in parliament on Thursday and will speak about the current situation in Iraq,” said Subhan. In an interview with BBC, Barzani said that they are working towards holding a referendum on Kurdistan’s future within the next few months. Barzani also stressed that the referendum will be for all the citizens of the Kurdistan Region, not only the Kurds and added that the birth of an independent Kurdish state will not be a threat to anyone.
