I think that you are exactly right that an investor/trader doesn't want to get too cute when it comes to being committed to the long side, when there is strong evidence that an intermediate (multi-month) bottom is in place.

However, for those who are active traders, it often makes sense to take partial profits on short term price spikes and look to add on sell-offs.

This is basically Thomson's approach and is also my approach.

As mentioned before, I tend to do short term trading in the gold producers and the GDX ETF, rather than the juniors.

Juniors tend to move on company specific factors

I don't trade PVG or most of my other top juniors, but look to add on weakness.

An understanding of fundamental and technical analysis can assist a trader/investor make better decisions regarding times to buy, sell, or add to current holdings.
