Electric cars is the future of
automobiles, When the first
electric car was developed people thought this technology would not last long due to its low performance battery. This was a great
challenge for electric car companies and finding ways to improve battery efficiency was their first motive. Luckily, companies like
Tesla have now managed to
upgrade their electric cars batteries to a higher level and researchers are now working on a new formula that will boost
the battery energy by 7X.
Researcher from the school of engineering at the University Of Tokyo have found a new way of developing lithium-ion batteries that will enhance the battery power seven times more that the current batteries used in the electric cars. The team has produced peroxide by using a new material on the positive electrode in the battery formed by adding cobalt to the lithium oxide crystal structure. This occurs an oxidation reduction reaction which produces peroxides resulting in high energy.
The energy density was recorded to be 2,570 watt-hours per kilogram which is still less that the density of lithium air technology which is 3,460 Wh/Kg , but according to the researchers this energy is far more stable and safer than lithium air. There were no unwanted byproducts produced during the reactions , no oxygen or carbon-dioxide was produced.
Researchers still has to perform more thorough testing before this technology could be applied in the real electric cars, so far their were no drawbacks in the test. The use of peroxide in the batteries will enhance the performance of electric carswhich can travel much further when fully charged.
