48.24% increase in Co demand above present forecasts by 2020

48.24% increase in Co demand above present forecasts by 2020This is turning into quite a compelling story.   By looking at forecasts for Cobalt supply and demand through 2020, and then adding the newer estimates regarding the recent surge in adoption of BEV, PHEV and HEVs, you get some pretty interesting numbers.

I read in a previous article that each hybrid needs 4Kg(~8 lbs) of cobalt per car, and each BEV  6Kg(12 lbs) (though I suspect high power Tesla's would require more).  If you then look  at forecasted worldwide sales of hybrid and electric vehicles, adding the impact of these 6.5Million vehicles by 2020, you get a staggering  required increase in Cobalt demand  of 48.24% above expected production (138M lbs of cobalt needed in 2020).

Wow.

The figures I am using for hybrid/BEV estimates are September 2013, even before Tesla published its desire to create a Giga factory.  On February 4, 2014 there was a report that Electric Vehicles are expected to surge by 67% in 2014 (and surged 73% in 2012).  This is becoming quite a little story.
